The immobilizer is the gatekeeper between your key and your engine. When it works you never think about it. When it fails you get a car that cranks strongly, fires for a second, and dies — with a blinking security light on the dash and a key that used to work perfectly yesterday.

These faults are frequently misdiagnosed as fuel or ignition problems, and owners spend real money on pumps and coils before anyone checks the security system.

Key Squad diagnoses and repairs immobilizer faults directly, including the module-level work that restores lost or corrupted security data.

What’s included

Correct diagnosis first

A security light and a two-second stall is a specific signature. We confirm it is the immobilizer before anyone spends money on parts.

Module realignment

After a module replacement or a battery event, the ECU, immobilizer, and cluster can lose agreement. We resynchronise them.

Security data recovery

Where a module's security data is corrupted, we can read, repair, and rewrite it at the chip level rather than replacing the whole unit.

Antenna ring and coil faults

Sometimes the key and module are both fine and the reader coil around the ignition has failed. That is a far cheaper repair, and we check it first.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

    Scan every module

We pull codes from the engine, body, and security modules — not just the engine — because immobilizer faults frequently log nothing on the powertrain side.

  2. 2

Test the key and the reader

We verify the transponder responds and the antenna coil is energising, which separates a key fault from a vehicle fault.

  3. 3

    Repair or realign

Depending on the fault we resynchronise the modules, rewrite the security data, or repair the failed component.

  4. 4

    Cold-start verification

We shut the vehicle down completely and restart from cold several times, because intermittent immobilizer faults hide behind a warm engine.

Immobilizer Programming & Repair — common questions

My car cranks but won't start and the security light is flashing. What is it?

That is close to a textbook immobilizer fault. The engine is mechanically fine — it is being denied fuel or spark by the security system because it did not get a valid key response. Common causes are a failed transponder in the key, a dead antenna coil around the ignition, a lost sync between modules after a battery change, or corrupted data in the security module.

Can a dead battery cause an immobilizer problem?

Yes, more often than people expect. A deep discharge or a sloppy jump-start can corrupt module memory or drop the sync between the immobilizer and the ECU. If your no-start began right after a battery replacement or a jump, mention that when you call — it points us straight at the likely cause.

Is this cheaper than the dealership?

Generally yes, substantially. Dealers frequently resolve immobilizer faults by replacing modules, because that is the sanctioned repair. We can often repair and rewrite the existing module instead, which avoids the part cost entirely. When a module genuinely has to be replaced, we say so.

How long does it take?

Most immobilizer work runs one to two hours. Diagnosis is the variable — the repair itself is often quick once we know what failed.
