"You need a new computer" is an expensive sentence, and it gets said more often than it is true. Genuine engine control module failure happens, but it is considerably rarer than the diagnosis rate suggests — because an ECU is the component that gets blamed when the fault is not obvious elsewhere.
Before you authorise a module, it is worth knowing what actually points to one.
What genuine ECU failure looks like
- No communication at all. A scan tool cannot establish a connection with the engine module, while other modules on the network respond normally. This is the strongest single indicator.
- Multiple unrelated sensor faults at once. Codes for circuits that share nothing in common, appearing together, often suggest the thing reading all of them has failed rather than all of them failing simultaneously.
- Visible damage. Water ingress, corrosion on the board, burnt components, or swollen capacitors. Modules mounted low or near the firewall are the usual victims.
- Complete no-start with no injector or coil command. Nothing is being asked to fire, and the wiring to those components checks out fine.
- Faults that appeared right after a voltage event. A jump-start with reversed polarity, a welding operation on the vehicle, or a lightning strike can genuinely kill a module.
What gets misdiagnosed as ECU failure
This is the list worth working through first, because every item on it is dramatically cheaper.
Bad grounds
Corroded or loose ground straps produce symptoms that look exactly like module failure — erratic behavior, multiple codes, intermittent no-starts. Grounds are cheap to check and frequently the answer. Any diagnosis that has not verified them is incomplete.
Wiring harness damage
Chafed insulation, rodent damage, and corroded connectors all mimic module faults. Rodent damage is seasonal and more common than people expect — cars parked outdoors in winter, particularly.
Immobilizer faults
A car that cranks and dies after two seconds with a security light is almost certainly a security system refusal, not a dead ECU. This is the single most common misdiagnosis we see, and it sends people to fuel pumps and computers over a fault in a completely different system.
Failed crank or cam sensors
Without a crank signal the module cannot command injection or spark, producing a no-start that looks like a dead computer. The sensor costs a fraction of a module.
Low battery voltage
Marginal batteries cause modules to behave erratically and set spurious codes. Any serious electrical diagnosis starts with a load test, not a module quote.
If it really is the module: clone, don't just replace
Modern modules are married to the vehicle. The ECU, the immobilizer, and the instrument cluster hold matching security data, and a donor module dropped in from another car will not start your vehicle. This is why a used module off eBay usually does not work.
There are two ways to make a replacement work, and they are meaningfully different.

Cloning is the better route whenever it is possible, which is why the original module should always be read before it is discarded. If a shop has already thrown your old module away, they have thrown away the easy path.
Get a second opinion
If you have been quoted for a module, a diagnostic second opinion costs a fraction of the part. We do this regularly and a meaningful share of the time the answer is a ground strap, a crank sensor, or a security fault.
When the module genuinely has failed, we say so — and then cloning it is usually cheaper than what the dealer would charge to program a new one.
