A key fob is no longer an accessory to a metal key — on most vehicles built after 2015 it is the key. It carries the rolling-code transmitter that talks to your body control module, the proximity antenna that lets the car detect you, and an emergency blade hidden in the housing.

That also means a dead, cracked, or lost fob is a real problem rather than an inconvenience, and it means replacing one is a programming job rather than a parts swap. Key Squad supplies the fob and does the programming in the same visit.

We carry inventory for the vehicles Louisville actually drives, and we hold stock for the European platforms most local locksmiths turn away.

What’s included

We supply the fob

You do not have to source a fob online, gamble on the FCC ID, and hope someone will program it. We bring the correct part, tested and matched to your vehicle.

Proximity and push-to-start

Keyless-entry and push-button-start systems need the fob paired to the vehicle's comfort access module, not just the immobilizer. We handle both halves.

Emergency blade cut

Every smart key hides a mechanical blade for when the battery dies. We cut yours to the door lock so it actually works when you need it.

Repair before replace

If the fault is a cracked case, a broken button pad, a dead coin cell, or a fractured solder joint on the battery terminal, we say so and repair it. That is a fraction of the cost of a new fob.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

    Identify the exact fob

Fobs are matched by FCC ID, frequency, and chip type — not by how they look. We confirm the right part from your VIN before we dispatch.

  2. 2

    Confirm the fault

At the vehicle we test whether the existing fob is transmitting. Plenty of 'dead' fobs are a $6 battery or a receiver fault, and we would rather tell you that.

  3. 3

    Cut the emergency blade

The mechanical blade is cut to your door lock code so it opens the driver's door when the fob battery fails.

  4. 4

    Pair to the vehicle

The fob is written to the immobilizer and, on keyless vehicles, to the comfort-access system so proximity unlock and push-start work.

  5. 5

    Function test

Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, remote start, proximity detection, and push-button start — every function is tested in front of you.

Key Fob Replacement & Programming — common questions

Can you program a fob I bought on Amazon or eBay?

Often yes, and we are happy to try — but understand the risk. Marketplace fobs are frequently the wrong FCC ID, locked to another vehicle, refurbished, or counterfeit chips that will not accept programming. We charge a programming-only labor fee, and if the fob will not take, that fee still applies because the time was spent. Buying the fob from us avoids that gamble entirely.

My fob works but the buttons do nothing. Is it dead?

Usually not. The most common causes are a dead coin cell, a worn rubber button pad, or a cracked solder joint on the battery contact. All three are repairable. If the vehicle still detects the fob for push-start but the buttons fail, that points strongly at the button pad rather than the transmitter.

Do I need to replace all my fobs at once?

No. On the vast majority of vehicles we can add a fob without disturbing the ones you already have. There are exceptions — some Honda, Acura, and older Toyota systems erase all keys when a new one is written, meaning every fob has to be present and reprogrammed together. We tell you which category your vehicle falls into before we start.

How much is a replacement key fob in Louisville?

Domestic and Asian remote-head keys generally run $165 to $290. European proximity smart keys — Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Land Rover — run $350 to $650 because the fob hardware and the programming platform are both substantially more expensive. We quote firm once we have your VIN.
