A proximity smart key never leaves your pocket. The vehicle runs a continuous low-frequency conversation with the fob, confirms it is genuinely nearby rather than relayed, and unlocks the doors and arms the start button accordingly.

That extra sophistication means a smart key has to be paired to more than the immobilizer. It has to be known to the comfort-access system, the body control module, and on many vehicles the steering lock as well.

Key Squad programs smart keys across domestic, Asian, and European platforms — including the encrypted systems that require dealer-level access.

What’s included

Full-system pairing

Immobilizer, comfort access, body control, and electronic steering lock — every module that needs to know about your key gets updated.

Encrypted platforms

Post-2018 vehicles increasingly gate key programming behind manufacturer security servers. We have the access to work these vehicles rather than turn them away.

Remote start preserved

Factory and aftermarket remote start systems have to be re-taught after a key change. We handle that in the same visit.

Emergency blade included

The hidden mechanical blade is cut to your door lock so a dead fob battery does not become a second lockout call.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

    Confirm the platform

We identify the exact security architecture from your VIN, because two vehicles of the same model year can use different systems depending on build date.

  2. 2

    Prepare the key

The fob is matched by frequency and chip, and the emergency blade is cut to code.

  3. 3

    Pair the key

We run the programming session and write the key into every module that needs it.

  4. 4

    Verify proximity behavior

Walk-up unlock, walk-away lock, push-button start, and remote functions are all tested. We also confirm the vehicle correctly refuses to start with the key outside.

Smart Key & Push-to-Start Programming — common questions

Why is a smart key so much more expensive than a regular key?

The hardware itself carries most of the cost. A proximity fob contains a low-frequency receiver, a UHF transmitter, an encrypted immobilizer chip, and on many European vehicles a manufacturer-locked secure element. Add a mechanical emergency blade and a moulded case, and the raw part frequently costs more than the labor to program it.

My car sometimes doesn't detect my key. Is the fob failing?

Not necessarily. Intermittent detection is more often a weak coin cell, RF interference from a phone or another fob sharing a pocket, or a failing antenna module in the vehicle. We test the fob signal strength and the vehicle's receivers separately so you replace the part that is actually at fault.

Can you program a smart key for a 2023 or newer vehicle?

In most cases yes. Newer platforms often require an online security session with the manufacturer, and we maintain that access. There are a small number of very recent models where key programming is genuinely restricted to franchised dealers, and we will tell you on the phone rather than charging you a service call to find out.

Do I have to be present for the programming?

Yes. We verify ownership at the vehicle before any programming begins, and you will want to confirm every function works before you pay.
