A replacement key for a Toyota Camry might run $200. The equivalent for a Range Rover can run $900. Owners reasonably suspect they are being charged for the badge.
They are not, mostly. There are four concrete reasons, and knowing them helps you tell a genuinely equipped shop from one that is about to subcontract your car to someone else.
Reason one: the fob itself costs more
European proximity keys are more complex objects. A typical one contains a low-frequency receiver, a UHF transmitter, an encrypted immobilizer chip, a mechanical emergency blade, and on many vehicles a manufacturer-locked secure element that cannot be sourced generically.
On several platforms the raw part cost — before anyone touches your car — exceeds the total price of a domestic key job.
Reason two: the security data is deliberately hard to reach
This is the big one. Domestic and Asian manufacturers generally allow authenticated aftermarket tools to request key programming through the diagnostic port. European manufacturers increasingly do not.
When the port is closed, the data has to come from the module directly. That means locating it, removing it, opening it, and reading it — sometimes through a dedicated interface, sometimes by making temporary connections to the board itself. A job that would take forty minutes becomes three hours, with real risk attached.
Reason three: the equipment is genuinely expensive
Covering the mainstream domestic and Asian market takes one good tool. Covering European platforms properly takes several specialized platforms, ongoing subscriptions, manufacturer access credentials, and adapters specific to individual module families.
For a general locksmith, that investment does not pay back on occasional jobs. Declining European work is a rational decision, not laziness — which is why so many shops in Louisville do exactly that.
Reason four: the risk is real
Module-level work on a modern European vehicle can go badly. A voltage dip mid-write can brick a module. A misread pinout can destroy a board. A wrong file written to the wrong address can turn a working car into one that needs a dealer recovery.
Shops that do this work carry that risk, and the price reflects it. Shops that do not carry it charge less because they are doing something easier.

The labor line is where the gap widens, and it widens because of hours and equipment rather than an inflated rate.
Is the dealership cheaper?
Rarely, and the comparison usually leaves out the tow. A vehicle with no working keys cannot be driven to a dealership, so the dealer route adds a tow bill and a service appointment that may be several days out.
The genuine exception is very recent models where aftermarket access does not yet exist. In that situation the dealer is the only option, and any honest locksmith will tell you so on the phone rather than charging you to find out.
The saving available to you right now
If you own a European vehicle and currently have one working key, adding a spare costs roughly half of what all-keys-lost will cost you later — sometimes less than half. It takes under an hour. It is the single best-value decision available to a European car owner, and almost nobody makes it until after the expensive version has already happened to them.
